Brian Camelio
Industry Pioneer & Strategic Advisor
Brian Camelio is the founder and CEO of ArtistShare, widely recognized for creating the first crowdfunding platform and as an early architect of today’s creator economy. Through ArtistShare, he pioneered a direct-to-fan model that enables artists to fund, market, and own their work through direct relationships with their audiences, reducing market risk before release. Originally developed for music, this approach influenced the broader shift toward audience-supported business models and the networked, community-driven dynamics that now underpin social platforms and independent businesses.
In 2004, the first ArtistShare project made history as the first Grammy Award-winning album not sold in retail stores. Projects he has consulted on have received 12 Grammy Awards and over 30 nominations.
More than two decades later, these models remain commercially viable and continue to inform his work in platform strategy and business model innovation.
Industry Recognition
The Web Foundation, founded by Sir Tim Berners-Lee, selected ArtistShare for their official World Wide Web 30th anniversary timeline, recognizing it as having “made a significant contribution to the web” alongside Google, Twitter, and CERN.
Bloomberg News called Brian Camelio “one of the fathers of crowdfunding” and described him as “a post-modern Ahmet Ertegun.”
Entrepreneur Seth Godin featured his work in “The Big Moo: Stop Trying to be Perfect and Start Being Remarkable” (2005).
“That is exactly what was playing in the mind of Boston musician Brian Camelio when he founded ArtistShare, the world’s oldest crowdfunding website for creative professionals, in 2003. Following the immense success of this brave new idea, other websites soon followed suit, and crowdfunding became a full-fledged industry.” ~ Forbes, 2016
